Face to face with the Goldener Volant at Automuseum PROTOTYP
Yes, our minions are truly everywhere! Earlier this month, Classic Steering Wheel Shop paid a visit to the extraordinary Automuseum PROTOTYP in Hamburg, Germany. If you're in Hamburg and passionate about the soul of automotive history, this museum is an absolute must-visit. Nestled in a lovingly restored 1904 factory in HafenCity, the private museum transcends any typical car museum —it's an aesthectic tribute to car design, technique and the pioneering spirits that shaped our motorsport culture.
Fascinating aesthectics
Operating under the powerful motto "Personen. Kraft. Wagen.", the museum seamlessly balances three core elements: the visionaries behind iconic vehicles, the raw might of their creations, and the exquisite machines themselves. Spanning three open floors, with no barriers or glass between you and the exhibits, the museum invites you into a sensory journey. It's the living stories and engaging interactivity that distinguish PROTOTYP.
We feasted our eyes on rare sports and racing cars—from the legendary Porsche Type 64 Berlin-Rome car to unique concept cars and Le Mans prototypes. Off course, our special attention was drawn to all the different steering wheel designs and a very special one on display in particular: The Goldener Volant.
Clean sweep
At the Berlin Grand Prix in 1956 on the AVUS, Count Wolfgang Trips participated in two races in a row and won both of them driving a Mercedes 300 SL and Porsche 550 Spyder. The “Goldener Volant” of the Association of German Motoring journalists (VDM) was given to Count Trips for the absolute fastest lap in all car classes over the race weekend. An impressive clean sweep! The award was previously only given to Juan Manuel Fangio and Edgar Barth.
What a wonderful afternoon — which we can only end with expressing our gratitude to the museum in the country’s own words: Vielen Dank für die Gastfreundschaft und bis zum nächsten Mal! 🏁
